My Mini Retirement

Yep I did it, I quit my job a few weeks ago.  I know what you’re thinking, and yes it was awesome.  I highly recommend quitting your job if you get the chance.  Well.. wait until you have a new one of course.  Don’t be some kind of idiot.

I had decided it was time to move on to my next great challenge and fortunately an opportunity came along that was perfect for me:  The Marketing Manager for the new Hard Rock Cafe opening this summer in Mall of America.  More on that later.

This opportunity gave me the chance to take a week off of work between gigs, which I did last week.  I had high hopes for that week, thinking it would be the ultimate vacation.  You see, I never completely stop thinking about work while vacationing.  Call it a curse, but it’s always in the back of my mind and I check work email a couple times per day.  I’m not a fanatic about it, I just like to be sure things aren’t going to hell while I am gone, leaving me with a ton of work when I get back.  The last thing I want is a ton of work, vacation or not!

And between jobs you have no work email to read, no projects to check and no coworkers to throw you under the bus while you’re not there to defend yourself.  I called it my mini-retirement and I fully intended to act like a retired person.  I wanted to sleep in, walk the dog, drink beer, watch old movies, hang out on my deck and get in a few rounds of golf.  That didn’t happen.

Unfortunately I’m not ACTUALLY retired.  I’m starting my new job right now in fact, Monday morning, and it’s a bit of an unusual start.  I’m currently in New York City and will be here for the next 25 days as part of Hard Rock’s training program.  Knowing that I would be gone nearly a month, I had a laundry list of shit to do before skipping town.  And yes, laundry was high on the list.

I had clothes and supplies to buy, random things to do around the house and people to spend time with before I left.  Not the least being my wife.  And my dog.  I made the most of my mini-retirement but it wasn’t nearly as lazy as I had hoped.

And now a new adventure awaits as I plan to wander all over NYC in my time off work.  The plan is to share any interesting stories with you here, so stay tuned.

First things first…  I’m working AND staying near Times Square, so I’m looking for a neighborhood bar I get go for a cheap beer or two within walking distance – away from the tourist chaos in this area.

Got something?  Leave a comment!
