Only In New York?

I’ve now been in New York City a few days and was hoping for a good story, but haven’t experienced anything too outrageous.  My hotel is near Times Square in the Garment District, or Fashion District as it’s also called.  I’m not sure if my location is the reason, but I have come across some very interesting people in this area.  Particularly at night.  They may intrigue me, but by New York standards they’re probably boring.

So even the most interesting of the bunch isn’t worth talking about.  However I have seen something that may fall into the “Only in New York City” category.  Like most cities you see bicycles locked up to light poles, trees, street signs, etc.  Nothing odd about that.  I was walking down the street and saw something that was odd… a two-wheel cart / dolly thing locked up to a sign, using a bicycle lock.

I have used a lot of two-wheeled carts in my life.  You could call me an amateur cart enthusiast.  And in my educated opinion there was absolutely nothing special about this one.  It was well used, banged up a bit and could benefit from a paint job.  So why was it locked up?  Is someone riding these things to work now?

Fortunately for you, I snapped this photo:

It’s tough to see and the picture quality is bad because I took it quickly while walking past.  It’s one thing to walk down the streets of New York taking photos – tourists do it all the time.  But what kind of goof walks down the street taking pictures of carts?  Apparently I do.

I saw this treasured cart while strolling down to the deli at the end of my block.  Walking back with my food I noticed the cart was GONE!  I suspect someone from a nasty gang of dolly thieves came along with a bolt cutter.  Just one SNAP and they were off with a free cart.  Is nothing safe?

HOOLIGANS!!
