Seeing people sleeping on New York subways isn’t unusual, although I have no idea how they do it. Every time the train stops and starts it feels like you are being throw around by an angry gorilla. And while some may find the clickity-clack sound of the subway rolling down the rails as soothing, I have a feeling it’s only slightly quieter inside the train than it would be riding on the roof.
I don’t always sleep on planes, but under the right conditions I’ll find myself drifting off to sleepy-time-dreamland. Of course planes don’t make sudden grinding stops in the air every three minutes. That’s probably a good thing.
So when I came across this fella taking a nap on the 1-train heading uptown towards Times Square it wasn’t that special. Even if he was pot-bellied and wearing sweatpants and tennis shoes.
I did find it a little amusing that he was sitting under an ad for McDonald’s that states (randomly) that “Happiness Runs In The Family.” As an advertising slogan I can’t see how that helps them sell Happy Meals. Maybe they should try:
“High Cholesterol And Heart Disease Runs In The Family… So Don’t Blame Us!”
Still, the pot-bellied, sweatpants & sneakers wearing guy sleeping on a subway under the odd Happy Meal sign was still not enough to get me to take his picture. What got me was his shirt. You can’t see it well on the photo but it says “NYC RUN – RACE MANAGEMENT” so this guy apparently works for a company who organizes 5K runs and the like.
The irony of all these things put together was too much for me, so I just had to snap a quick photo.
